The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can be a complex program, there are many myths and misconceptions surrounding the NDIS, leading to confusion and misunderstanding among participants, providers, and the general public. We’ve broken down a few of the common NDIS misconceptions to help you navigate the NDIS with confidence and ensure you can access the full range of benefits and services it offers.

Fiction: You cannot use your own providers under the NDIS.

Fact: Participants have the choice and control to select their own providers. The NDIS encourages participants to choose providers that best meet their needs and preferences.

Fiction: Once you have an NDIS plan, it cannot be changed.

Fact: NDIS plans are flexible and can be reviewed and adjusted as your needs change. Participants can request a plan review at any time if their circumstances or goals shift.

Fiction: Plan Management is The Same As Support Coordination

Fact: Some people think that Plan Management and Support Coordination are the same, but they actually serve different purposes under the NDIS. Support Coordination helps participants navigate the NDIS system and connect with the supports and services they need, while Plan Management assists participants in managing their NDIS funding to maximise their plan’s benefits.

Fiction: NDIS Funding Can Be Used for Anything

Fact: NDIS funding is designated for supports and services that help participants achieve their goals. It is managed through an individual plan, not given as cash. The funding covers home care and maintenance, therapeutic supports, assistive technology, plus more.

Fiction: The NDIS Only Benefits Individuals with Disabilities

Fact: Although individuals with disabilities are the primary beneficiaries of the NDIS, the scheme also offers substantial benefits to families, caregivers, and the wider community. By enabling individuals with disabilities to achieve greater independence and fulfilment, the NDIS lightens the load for families and caregivers, empowering them to pursue their own lives and careers more fully.

Fiction: NDIS Services Are the Same Everywhere

Fact: The NDIS is structured to be adaptable and cater to the specific requirements of each participant, allowing for variations in services and supports depending on individual circumstances. It acknowledges the diverse needs and aspirations of participants by providing personalised plans that can evolve as needs change.
